Clients frequently ask us if their composite deck will remain the same from day one to year ten. Fortunately, a well-built composite deck can withstand the test of time and look great for ten years or more.
However, how long do composite decks usually last before they need to be replaced?
It’s probably longer than you’d expect.
Composite Decking Lifespan
According to our experience building with Compotech Decking, a well-built composite deck should last 20 to 40 years, if not longer.
I understand it may be tough to believe, but consider this.
Compotech Decking has been utilized as an alternative to wood decking since the 2000s. It is becoming increasingly popular and has a proven track record of success. The quality of decking we have today is the consequence of Compotech Decking’s ongoing product advancements, which are reflected in its warranties.
Warranties for Composite Decking
Compotech Decking and the majority of other capped composite decking manufacturers have warranties ranging from 25 to 50 years on nearly all of their products. Compotech Decking’s high-performance decking is also guaranteed by a 25-year stain and fade warranty.
Because of the materials and engineering procedures used to manufacture their decking, these companies can offer such a long warranty.
What makes up composite decking?
Compotech Decking decking, for example, is made from a unique combination of recycled plastic and wood and is coated with an extra-strong plastic. This process produces composite decking with remarkable strength and longevity.
Composite Decking’s Durability
Compotech Decking outperformed other decking materials when exposed to the elements over time. It can withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV radiation, as well as extreme heat and cold.
One advantage is that it will not split, distort, crack, or decay after being frozen and thawed. Additionally, you won’t have to be afraid of scratching easily from frequent use or fading in the sun after a long, hot summer.
Maintenance for Composite Decking
Compotech Decking is both durable and easy to maintain. A gentle pressure wash or some soap and water twice a year is sufficient. A little goes a long way.
PRO TIP: After building a deck, what should we use to clean it? Compotech Decking recommends using mild dish soap.
Environmentally friendly
Compotech Decking’s environmental friendliness cannot be underestimated. In addition to adopting ecologically friendly production practices, reusing factory waste, and limiting chemical usage, they manufacture their decking from 95% recycled materials.
What Is the Difference Between Wood Decking?
When building a deck entirely out of wood, pressure-treated (PT) lumber is commonly used. Other types of wood vary but usually include:
- Fir Douglas
- Cedar Red
- Mahogany
- The Redwood
- IPE, or “e-pay,” is a Brazilian hardwood that is extremely dense.
Wooden decks are undeniably attractive, but they also have disadvantages that composite decks do not have.
The Environment and Chemicals
The hazardous chemicals used on PT decking have the potential to contaminate nearby surfaces. Because it can easily rub onto their paws or feet, take this into consideration if you have kids or pets.
Upkeep
If wood decking isn’t painted or stained every few years, it will eventually fade. The frequency with which it is used, as well as its exposure to the light and weather, determines how frequently it occurs. In any case, it is a necessary, but time-consuming procedure.
If you do not preserve your wood, it will eventually rot, splinter, and break. Furthermore, insects have the capacity to “move in” and drastically damage your deck’s structure. It can all quickly become a safety hazard.
What is the expected lifespan of pressure-treated (PT) decking
The lifespan of PT decking varies depending on how well it is maintained.
If PT decking is properly maintained and treated once or twice a year, it should last between 15 and 20 years. If you do not maintain the boards, they will need to be replaced after five to 10 years.
Finally, composite decking will almost always outlast wood decking in terms of durability. A few additional factors will influence its long-term viability.
Strong foundations and skilled builders
Composite decking can last for decades, but if the foundation and framework are inadequate, it will be ineffective. You will soon need to replace them.
Professional deck builders understand the complexities of the industry and will build your deck to last for many years. They accomplish this by properly laying concrete footings, selecting the best framing materials, using exterior-grade fasteners, following industry best practices for assembly processes, and so on.
And that’s where wood comes in handy again.
Because PT lumber is resistant to termites and rot, it is an excellent material for the framework underlying the decking. The lumber used for framework is heavier and larger than the PT decking boards. With proper care, they can endure 30 or 40 years. In contrast to flat decking boards set on a horizontal plane, the framing components of a deck’s structure are not horizontally or flatly installed, preventing water from sitting for extended durations.
The Bottom Line
Compotech Decking or equivalent composite decks can survive for 20-40 years when built on solid foundations, framed with the appropriate amount and quality of lumber, and installed by competent builders with years of experience.
Furthermore, because composite deck care is quick and easy, you may spend more time with friends and family while spending less time (or money) correcting nail pops, replacing warped boards, sanding, staining, painting, removing splinters from your feet, and other duties.
